Farewell Mr Carroll

Today we had a very special final assembly when we farewelled Mr Carroll. The choir and the kapa haka group performed and there were speeches and presentations. Mr Carroll has been with us for five years and we wish him all the best on his next adventure. We were very proud of Charlie and Charlotte who sang solos.

This morning Mrs Horner brought her instruments in to share with us. She played the same tunes on a recorder, a clarinet and two different saxophones. They each sounded so different. I wonder if any Room 9 child will try another wind instrument. We think you are very clever Mrs Horner. Thank you so much for coming.

Leaving ceremony for the Year Three children

We had a special afternoon to farewell the Year Three children from the Junior Syndicate. Our parents joined us in the Allen Centre for a feast of entertainment. The Year Threes led our singing and each child gave a short speech. The guitar club performed and Room 9 recorders, complete with "Ode to Joy," played with enthusiasm. Olivia and William even played a recorder, guitar duo. What a great celebration of these marvelous students!

We started the day with the Year 3 children practicing their comments for the final Junior Syndicate assembly. We then went outside where it was cool to practice our recorder items for the assembly. We're still not sure if Ode to Joy is ready to be performed! Then at lunch time, singing happily, we walked down to the rugby field for our picnic. The weather was perfect, we had ice blocks and we even had races like the three-legged race. What a great day!

After lunch we started a strange project. We had to draw around our hands and then colour them green. After that we cut them out. What on earth were we making? We kept drawing more and more hands and Mrs Wright started to staple them on to the wall. Suddenly we could see that a Christmas tree was forming. When we added lights and tinsel it was perfect and we all burst into "We wish you a merry Christmas......"

Drive You Nuts!

We have a new puzzle in the classroom called "Drive You Nuts," and it really does drive you nuts! All the numbers on the cogs have to match up and it is very difficult. Abby and Georgia only had two more pieces to connect correctly. Can you complete the puzzle?

The Little Match Girl

This morning we were the first class to go into the Allen Centre to watch "The Little Match Girl." A group of children had worked in the Allen Centre to prepare this drama with Mrs Steadman and Mrs Horner. It was a sad, sad story but what a wonderful performance.

A group of senior students have made real rockets so we went out on to the field again to watch the launching. They were brilliant as they shot up into space and we watched in wonderment as a parachute appeared and floated gently back to school. We were so pleased that Jason was able to come to Room 9 and explain the rocket making to us. What a day!

First thing in the morning the bottles were all lined up ready for their big day. Out on the field we decorated the bottles and filled them with water. On each bottle we stuck a photo of Mr Carroll because we were going to give him a great send off on his new adventure. Then each of us took our bottle to a rocket launcher and wheee off they zoomed!

Christmas art Fun

Today we were at the Art Gallery. It was a lot of fun. We had to draw a Christmas tree. We all did it a new way. After we drew our tree we had to put dye around the out-side. Then we cut out some presents and we got a cut out star. Next we got lots of help from the adults and then we stuck on some glitter. Finally we put on some plastic ornaments and we chose a person or an animal to put on the side. We had a lot of fun.

On Thursday I went onto the new courts and climbed the fat poles and the skinny poles. Abby and Emma were playing with me while Kate was making daisy chains. It was very easy to climb them because we were sweating . If we are sweating we can stick to the pole. When I swing down the pole it was ok but when I got back to the bottom my feet were very hot so I ran and played on the grass.

Today the Koalas presented a play, "Waiting for the feast," to the class. We all laughed and laughed when Emma hid under the boxes. Great acting girls and brilliant questions for the class.

On Saturday my toe got infected. It was so sore that I had to go to the doctor. I had to wait for a an hour and then it was my turn to go to see the doctor. They had to put a needle in my toe. I was very brave because I was eating a lollipop!

This term our theme for the disco was story book characters and what a variety of characters could be seen. We danced and danced and danced and it was great fun. Room 9 has some wonderful dancers! Miss Petrie went to Outram School when she was a little girl and she will be 100 on December 11th. I wonder what Outram School was like 100 years ago. Getting ready for the rocket launch!

I got a bee-sting and it really hurt. I had to stay at home for 2 days. It was really weird because I had to have ice on my foot. It was really COLD!!! Mum and Dad were my slaves. I could watch T.V when ever I wanted to. It was really hot and itchy. I had to hop every-where. My leg that I had to hop on was really sore because I put all my weight on it. On Wednesday I had to walk on it. That was really sore. The next day I had to go to school. That was hard to get around a little bit. And on Monday the day I got stung, it was just past my knee.

The Room 9 Little Theatre opened again with a short play, "The Sun and the North Wind." After an excellent performance the cast asked some very searching questions Well done! At lunchtime the Guitar Club met and we enjoyed our favourite songs. Then at the end of day we shared these songs with the class. We just love singing!

What fun we had at the Pet Show! There were mystery jars to investigate and a bouncy castle to enjoy. Our very own Olivia entertained the crowd singing with her guitar and the Junior Choir sang two songs complete with solos and harmony. Finally our jump jam team performed. We are very proud of them because they were placed seventh in the South Island.

Amity arrived with this huge paper plane that could fly around corners. Great original and independent thinking Amity. The Athletics Sports

The weather didn't look good but we all still turned up at Memorial Park for the Athletics Sports. We rotated around 6 events and then we all joined together for the 40m sprint. We are so pleased for you Byron. Georgia was pleased to find yet another book about training dogs and Ben shared the plan he used to make a go cart with his dad when we visited the Allen Centre today.

We have been asked to explain railway tracks

First you line up in 2 lines then say GO. The leader runs off and count 5 steps. Then they lie down on the ground. Everyone then follows over and the next leader runs 5 steps and then lies down. Again everyone follows over and a new leader will lie down. It is a race to seer which team will get to the end first. We hope this helps you Mrs Wilson.

Sharing from the Guitar Club

Our numbers at Guitar Club were low today because the Jump Jam team was practicing and the Kapa haka group was also meeting. However we all had a sing together and then Amity showed us how fast she could play 'A'Soaling.' Brooke demonstrated how to pluck and Keziah played a short classical piece for us. It all sounded great!

The Garden Club is up and running again

We worked hard today clearing silver beet and lettuce and spinach from the gardens and then we planted potatoes. The strawberries are already planted and the peas are in flower. What a wonderful place to grow vegetables.

A Dance Extravaganza

We had seen signs of a performance - fantastic outfits, earnest groups of children planning their movements - and finally it was performance day. We crept quietly into the Allen Centre and watched with amazement as a flood of colour and movement washed over us. Thank you Mrs Stedman and the delightful dancers, we loved your performance - and we were allowed to see it twice!

We managed to squeeze in an extra session of gymnastics this week especially as we had Georgia, a gymnastics champion, with us. Ben showed us how he has perfected his take off on the beat board and Georgia amazed us with her beam work. We had a lot of questions for her!

As we all walked to our phonics groups we couldn't help noticing the blossom trees around the school. They are beautiful.

What a strange plant

Our plant has grown so much. Room 9 has been watching the plant for quite a long time now. We got an information sheet and we wrote the things that we noticed had changed on the plant.

It started with a tiny closed up bud. Then out came the leaves and now there is a flower. You can see the tree that the buds came from. It is called a chestnut tree.

This morning we all enjoyed the "You've got the power show." We laughed, we gasped, we watched with disbelief as El Grego kept us entertained with a constant stream of amazing theatre stunts. Every second of the performance reminded us to treat others as we would wish them to treat us.

House Soccer matches

At lunchtime there was a soccer game. Waihola and Mahinerangi were in a team and Wanaka and Manapouri , Wakatipu. We had a fantastic game and it was very fun. Finn was the referee. Finn and Zeke played our best. Me and Liam were the best in our team . Finn got both of our goals. Our team had more players than the other team. Most of our team were Year 4s. All of our team were the best in the game. We won by 2 points.

Oh look at these beautiful freesias that Kylie brought along to school. They smell incredible. Emma arrived today with a great All Blacks outfit on while Josh T brought along a Rugby World Cup quiz he had prepared for the class. Then in walked Josh W with this little rugby ball cupcake. It is always interesting in Room 9 when we arrive in the morning!

Te Rakau

We had our first session with the te rakau sticks. We listened carefully to the starting command and it sounded like one set of sticks when we started. Next time we will add the music and keep in time with the rhythm.

A Rugby World Cup colouring competition and three winners

We all took part in a colouring competition and then voted for the winners. It was very close but here are the winners - Kylie, Josh T and Lachlan. What a great effort!
