A visit from Bruce Potter and dress up day

Bruce Potter the well known author and illustrator came to speak to us as part of Book Week. We laughed and laughed as he shared his books and songs and we were amazed as we watched him draw. It was also a dress up as your favourite book character day. Hartley looked great as Harry potter.

Gosh, is that real money?

Today I brought some old money to share with the class.  My Mum had the money from a long time ago. Altogether I had $59.

The Book Police arrived in Room 9

Loud horns surprised us as the Book Police stormed into Room 9. Instantly, we had to stop what we were doing and grab our chapter books and read silently for ten minutes. We are really enjoying Book Week!

Kyle Mewburn came to visit

This week is Book Week at Outram School. As a special treat, the famous author Kyle Mewburn came to visit us. First of all he spoke to the whole school and then in the afternoon he came to share with Room 9 and Room 10. We loved listening to him reading his stories.

Stewart Island

Last weekend I flew down to Stewart Island in a tiny plane. Gosh what a beautiful island and what amazing birds everywhere. Can you name the birds in these photos?  Have a read of the information sheet and add a new fact to this post. Make sure you read the other comments to make sure that you have not repeated a piece of information.

Tiny one-cell creatures in the Allen Centre

Today Mrs Stedman showed us tiny grains of sand that were the remains of tiny one-celled creatures. We were then introduced to an amazing game that helps us to understand what we would find inside one of these cells. How can something so tiny contain so much!

Extra for Experts

The Extra for Experts task this week was to create an advertisement for Outram School. We were very impressed with the quality of these advertisements. If you want a quality school, you should come to Outram School.

Angus is amazing!

In the holiday I made a kaleidoscope. It took me a lot of time to make it. Mum helped me do the cutting out of the plastic. I feel very proud of it.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Today we were very pleased to welcome Constable Greer to Room 9. He has been a Room 9 friend for a long time! He led us in a discussion on what we should do if we get lost. We also watched a DVD about Constable Bryan and his dog Bobby. It is important to know our address, phone number and even a designated meeting place.

Welcome to Room 9 Brylee

We were very pleased to welcome Brylee into Room 9 today. She arrived smiling and has quickly made new friends. Thank you Anita for helping Brylee on her first day.

Can you see where I have been?

Firstly can you see where I have been this afternoon? Secondly can you discover which city is the furthest away and which city is the closest to where I am standing? Happy holidays!

Another challenge in the Allen Centre

The challenge in the Allen Centre this morning was to learn how to use isometric paper. This was a great challenge but it was only the start. We were shown how to draw Minecraft landscapes! With all the Minecraft experts in Room 9, the tables were soon covered with drawings. Of course we issued holiday boks, played chess and enjoyed our books. We love the Allen Centre!

Life Education

As one of our follow up activities after the Life Education bus visited, we have been keeping a feelings diary this week. Each day after writing we form a sharing circle and we can decide whether to share or not.

Our Penpals have written to us!

There was great excitement in Room 9 today as the penpal letters were read and shared. What a lot we know about these new friends already. After the holidays we will write again to answer their questions and share our holiday adventures.

Mu Torere

As part of our Matariki study we learnt a traditional Maori game called Mu Torere. We played in the classroom using a game board. Then we decided to make our own Mu Torere games using natural materials in the playground.
