We have a bean!!!

We have been watching our bean plant for weeks hoping that we would grow at least one bean and now it is happening. We pollinated with paint brushes because we had no bees in the classroom. It looked like a dismal failure until today we spotted one little bean developing. Our paint brush pollination has worked! Yay!

The City of Dunedin Orchestra comes visiting today

It was a real thrill to have a visit from members of the City of Dunedin orchestra today. We listened in delight to both classical and modern pieces and enjoyed learning about the different instruments. It was great to see how many Outram pupils are learning an instrument.

Fundamental Fun Day at Forsyth Barr Stadium

There was great excitement as we left school for the Stadium. Some off us had never been inside before. Once we arrived, we quickly formed teams and then took part in an energetic rotation of activities. Which activity was your favourite? Thank you Sport Otago!

Collecting data

We are all involved in carrying out our own statistical investigation. We have formed a question and made a hypothesis about the results. Today we questioned each other to gather data. Next we will display this data and interpret it.

Marjory from Otago S.P.C.A. came visiting

Today Marjory from Otago S.P.C.A. came visiting with Kudos and Ralph. We learnt some important dog safety rules. Always ask permission to touch a dog. Wait for the dog to approach you. Pat them under the chin not on the top of their heads or near their eyes. We also learnt what to do if we met an angry dog. Thank you Marjory, we won't forget.

Yesterday I took a photo of me and my cat Kitty with my little garden seedlings.  I have heaps  of little gardens. Some times it gets really hot in the glass house.

House Games

This afternoon the seniors organised summer games. The children were divided first into their houses and then into seniors and juniors. We were all pleased to be outside on this warm spring afternoon.

Oh what an artist you are Dan!

In the weekend I drew this pheasant with my pastels.  It has a bright red head and a big brown chest.I love drawing.

Exploding corks

We worked in our groups again and poured vinegar into our bottles. We then made a parcel of baking soda and carried everything outside. After putting on safety glasses, we dropped the parcel of baking soda into the vinegar and quickly pushed the cork into the bottle. Standing well back, we watched the cork explode out of the bottle. Who can remember why this happened?

Making a lava lamp

To start with, we talked about the properties of water and oil and then we thought about food colouring. In groups we added water and then oil and waited for it to separate. We then added the food colouring and again waited. The food colouring slowly dropped to the bottom. We then added an aspro clear tablet and the results were dramatic. The aspro clear contains baking soda and citric
acid.  A chemical reaction occurs and carbon dioxide is formed. Bubbles of gas rise up through the oil making colourful bubbles.

What is that insect?

On Tuesday me and Claudia were playing in the stone play ground and I found an insect. We went over to Dan and showed him.  Dan didn't  know what it was. It had a missing antenna. We also showed Mr Marshall. What do you think it is?

Folk dancing for fitness and fun

As part of our dance unit we have learnt several new dances. Jiffy Mixer is a line dance and Minushka is a dance that requires improvisation. The other dances that we know became our warm up activity.
