The Inaugural Outram School Tug of War Challenge

We gathered in our house groups on a beautiful late autumn afternoon. Mr Marshall gave us our instructions and then the competition began, one house against another. Muscles rippled, hands gripped and the ground became softer and softer. The competition will finish next week and at this stage, any house could win!

We love the Allen Centre!

The chess sets came out today while we were in the Allen Centre and there were some serious games taking place.   However perched nearby, a colony of readers were in a world of their own!

Kitchen Science continues

Today working in pairs, we all did the In-Flat-Able experiment  following a sheet of instructions. We combined baking soda and vinegar in a bottle and quickly attached a balloon. Carbon dioxide was formed and as it expanded, it filled the balloon. The most difficult part was attaching the balloon quickly.

Patterns with three or four variables

Today we had a fun game with our algebra. In small groups we made up patterns with three or more variables. The rest of the class had to spot the pattern. We then invited children to join the pattern and stand in the correct position. What fun!

Contributing to the community

Our challenge this term is "Contributing to the community."  We were wondering how we could contribute to the Outram community when we remembered the Outram Playcentre.   We decided to take our assembly item music and share it with our Playcentre friends.  It was great fun and what a wonderful audience.  Thank you for letting us share with you!

Goodbye Kyla

Today we farewelled dear Kyla. We have loved having Kyla in Room 9. Last week we had a special shared lunch. Today we presented Kyla with a lovely class photo card and then we shared our special memories of Kyla. Travel safely Kyla.

Kitchen Science Continues

Experiment 6 was "Spreading Pepper." We scattered pepper over a bowl of water. The pepper floated and we thought of many reasons why. We then talked about surface tension being like a skin on the top of the water. There was great excitement at the tables when soap was added to the plates. The pepper shot to the side of the bowl because the soap breaks the surface tension. We made a cardboard boat and when we added soap it also shot to the side of the bowl.

Back to the hall for gymnastics

We had another rotation in the hall this afternoon.  Thank you so much to our parent support. Michael showed great concentration on the beam while Finn was an expert with his side vault.

Oh what a wet and cold old day!

There was some great teamwork in Room 9 today. Regan showed Kyla how to play a new game on the iPad and Isaac shared a new game with Reuben. Mac made sure everyone had a turn. Nick and Angus also worked happily together. Even though it was freezing outside we stayed warm and busy inside.

A baking soda volcano with Aynsley

Once when I got home I ran into the kitchen. I got out the vinegar  and baking soda out. I made a volcano by mixing the baking soda and the vinegar. Look what happened!

Room 9 Assembly Item

Today it was our turn to present an item at assembly. We showed our autumn leaf prints and our parabola drawings. We also played three recorder tunes, presented "Copycat Rap," and finished by singing "She'll be right." Well done children - I was proud of you. If any of the parents took a photo we would love to see it because we forgot to take the camera with us.

Working at balance with gymnastics today

We had our first session with gymnastics today and we were working at balance. We moved around a rotation in five teams and we were really pleased to have two mothers helping. Remember Tuesday and Friday are our gymnastics days so please wear clothes that are appropriate.

Jump Jam for the Middle Syndicate

Outdoor fitness was cancelled today because of the rain so we were all pleased to go into the hall for a Jump Jam session. By the time we were finished our hearts were beating fast and there were many pink faces. Great effort everyone!

What a huge sandcastle creation!

We all had fun building a village in the sandpit. It took all lunchtime and it was hard. I loved the mansion that we built. We all worked as a team. The part that I liked was digging the tunnels. I liked the monster truck track. We also had an airport.

Farewell lunch for Kyla

We had a special lunch today to say farewell to Kyla. She has been such a good friend to everyone. We  are sad that she is leaving and we wish her well in the future. Don't forget to write to us Kyla.

Welcome, welcome, welcome Rosa!

We have a lovely new girl in Room 9 and already she is shining. We hope you will be very happy at Outram School because I know we are very happy to have you with us!

A milk and vinegar chemical reaction

Chemistry is such fun. Today we mixed vinegar and warm milk. Normally the protein molecules in the milk float around without joining together. When you add vinegar the protein molecules (casein) suddenly attract one another and form clumps. We washed away all the whey and formed the casein into shapes. We're wondering what will happen now.
