An important day for our 3D paper spill construction

Today was an important day for our 3D paper spill construction. Mrs Stedman came to assess our effort. She was VERY impressed. We got 5 gold stars for being free standing. We got another 5 gold stars for having moving parts and we got 4 gold stars for our use of tape. Then we were delighted to receive prizes! We got Su Doku books, a story starter kit and a wonderful new book to enjoy, "Beautiful Oops!" Thank you dear Mrs Stedman. Congratulations Room 9!

A 3D paper spill construction.... I love the colourful hands on the delicate background.

Could you explain to me the process you took so I could try this same idea with my Year 4/5 class?

All about us said...

Dear Allana and your amazing Year 4/5 class. The challenge we were presented with was to make a 3D free standing structure out of paper spills using minimal tape and having moving part/s. It has taken us most of the term to achieve this. We had to learn how to make paper spills out of newspaper. That was a challenge! We then learnt how to make a truss with 4 spills and extra spills for diagonal cross bracing. Then it was a matter of joining the trusses to make our structure. The moving part was a door that opens and closes. The roof was made out of thatched spills. Our over riding theme this year is 'working together.' We started the year with a series of challenges requiring us to work together. This was followed by an examination of skeletons and how the parts work together. We then moved on to bridges again with the same theme and constructed our own. Alongside this was the paper spill project that probably took about 8 weeks. If you track back through this blog you will be able to see the process step by step. We would love to support you in this project and could maybe skype with you to share helpful hints. The structure will now be a permanent part of our classroom and complete with cushions children retreat in there when they want to silent read - two at a time!
