The Room 9 Bird Cafe is open

The temperatures really dropped this afternoon and the local bird life flocked to our bird table for nourishment. We have to creep carefully to the window if we want to do a spot of bird watching.

Matariki kite making

The other part of our Extra for Experts activity this week was to try and make a traditional Maori kite from materials found in the garden. Luke and Regan certainly rose to the challenge and created this wonderful flax kite. The boys shared the kite with both Room 9 and Room 10 and we were all very impressed. Well done boys!

Ginger beer with Luke

Luke loved our Kitchen Chemistry unit and he took it one step further when he made ginger beer. Today he arrived in Room 9 with a huge bottle to share with us. Everyone was very happy to have a taste. Thank you scientist Luke.

Hands on with Matariki

Our Extra for Experts activity was linked to our study of Matariki. Children were encouraged to learn some string games to share with the class. There was a very busy session as the string games were shared.

Matariki has come to Room 9

Today we drew and decorated our Matariki stars. Luke suggested that we should hang them in groups of seven around the room. We also finished our jigsaw investigations. Next week each group will present their information about Matariki.

Vanishing point with Olivia

Don't you think it's amazing?  Can you see the difference between the second and last optical illusions? Do you think its fun? My big sister Olivia did these.

Building forts in the sandpit

On Monday we were in the sandpit building forts. Luckily we found a shovel so it was easier to build. It was super fun.

Jig saw puzzle investigation

We worked in groups today to find out Matariki facts. When we have published our facts, each group will report back to the class. Stellar, Finn, Nick, Gabby and Luke provided great leadership.

Kind gifts from the Mosgiel Rotary Club

There was great excitement in Room 9 today as Room 9 and Room 10 children waited in anticipation. Suddenly in walked five members of the Mosgiel Rotary Club carrying heavy boxes. Each Year 4 child was presented with a beautiful dictionary to keep and use at school. The Year 3 children were not sad because they know they will get a dictionary next year. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Persuasive Writing

We are learning how to write a persuasive argument to prepare for the speech competition next term. Today Briar, Isaac, Luke and Hannah shared their arguments. We were impressed and decided that there were very good reasons for having a three day weekend!

Matariki

Today we turned on the lights around our wall display as we began our Matariki picture focus. We moved around the different stations examining the images. It was amazing how much we learnt.

Life Education Van

Hooray, hooray, hooray! The Life Education Van has arrived at Outram School again and that means we meet Harold the giraffe again. Today we watched a video about a new boy arriving at school. We talked about our feelings and about being a 'cool classmate.' We are looking forward to the next session with Pip and Harold on Wednesday.

What a busy Friday!

What a busy day we had today. The Seniors joined us for Jump Jam this morning which encouraged us to try even harder. During our library session we learnt about Kandinski,  chose books, played chess and looked closely at stones with the microscope. Balance and control were the themes during gymnastics and at lunchtime there was a House Newspaper challenge in the hall. Finally we finished our pen pal letters ready for delivery. Phew! We are ready for the weekend!

A new adventure is opening up in the Allen Centre - Kandinsky - colour and music

Every week when we visit the Allen Centre, Mrs Stedman has a new adventure for us. Today we learnt about Kandinsky. When he painted colours he could hear music. Using his colours and musical knowledge we are going to create a class musical composition. First we need to paint our colour circles.
